The Day I left for London
Poignant stories of Indian emigrating to Britain

In 1964, Kuljeet Sharma came from her village with her two very young children to join her husband, who didn't turn up at Heathrow. Then a man approached her introducing him as his husband's cousin and offered her to take to Bradford by train. Imagine how terrified she must have been.

In 1968 Shail Agrwal, a Hindi poetess and story writer, came to join her doctor husband. The enthusiastic doctor turned up at Heathrow with a procession of 20 bachelor  friends who have come to welcome their one and only Bhabhi ji in the UK.

In 1963, Dial Sharma, BA, LLB, came to the UK  to earn Rs. 50,00 and then to return back to his home in Punjab. And he is still here. He tells the story of his journey by ship where one of his cabin mates sold him dreams of English wine and women.
